Lockwood Racing's Fabian Coulthard heads to Symmons Plains for the Tyrepower Tasmania 400 this weekend confident he has a car capable of challenging for race wins.
With a strong run at the first round in Adelaide, and again at the support races for the Australian Grand Prix, Coulthard and the Lockwood Racing VF Commodore have been in fine form.
Last season, Coulthard claimed his first round victory in Tasmania, collecting two impressive race wins - with team mate Jason Bright also scoring a race win.
"Symmons is one of those tracks that?s always been kind to me," he said.
"I got my first podium there in 2009 so to win 2 races last year was pretty awesome ? the first championship wins of my career and I?m looking forward to getting a few more.
"The circuit is great; it looks pretty simple on paper but it?s quite a technical little track.
"There are only 5 or so corners but you generally find that first to 25th is covered by less than a second so it?s one of those places that you have to be 100% accurate all the time to get the best possible lap."
This season, the Lockwood Racing VF Commodore has shown considerable pace during races and the team has worked diligently to improve the car in qualifying trim.
"I think we made some good setup inroads at the grand prix," Coulthard said.
"I?m a lot more confident with the qualifying speed in the car now, I?ve always said that?s the easiest time to pass cars.
"I think we?re heading in the right direction, I?m pretty confident of that so we?ll see how we go when we get there."
Coulthard currently stands second in the Championship and while it's early days, he acknowledges that it provides a solid platform leading in to Symmons Plains.
"Clipsal gives us a great building block compared to where we were last year when we left Adelaide 23rd in the championship and finished 6th overall so to leave the track second in the championship is a great foundation to work from," he said.ssss
The Tyrepower Tasmania 400 kicks off on Friday at Symmons Plains with cars hitting the track for practice at 10:10am.
There are two 100 kilometre races on Saturday and one 200 kilometre race on Sunday.
