THE WORD FROM TIM
A late safety car put team strategies to the test today in Race 17 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship in Townsville. Tim qualified in 7th position today, and was showing good pace throughout todays 200km race. Freightliner Racing opted to pit Tim early and do two longer stints in the latter part of the race, as Tim is one driver who really knows how to manage and make the most of his tyres.
Tim had a six-second gap to the next car and others, who had slightly better tyres when a late saftey car was called to remove debris off the circuit. With the gap quickly diminished this meant Tim was under immense pressure from those behind and was passed by a couple of cars in the final laps of the race. He finished the race in 11th.
“We opted to stop a little earlier than others which made the latter stints that little bit longer than we wanted. We were trying to be conservative knowing we’d need to be good on the tyres there knowing we were going for a few laps longer than some others. We had about a six second gap there to Fabian behind us, then some others behind who were on slightly better tyres. The late safety car closed that gap completely, so we were trying to defend as best as possible. That’s where different strategies can play a crucial part in the race.”
“We’ve got a bit of work to do to get a little bit more speed for tomorrow. We know our car looks after it Dunlop tyres well.”
