THE RECAP & WORD FROM TIM / ASH
It was a continuous fight for the Freightliner Racing duo of Tim Slade and Ash Walsh today at the Bathurst 1000.
Starting out of 20th, Ash was in the drivers’ seat for the start of the great race. Suffering early brake issues, Ash found himself taking two minor off track excursions; putting the pair in last place. When Slade took the wheel, he had contact with Alex Rullo at the chase, the questionable contact resulting in a time penalty of 15 seconds, which would be served during a pit stop.
There was no doubt the car was fast, it was just a matter of working their way up the order and staying out of trouble, which included a very close call when Dumbrell went off at the chase and across the circuit in front of the Freightliner Racing Commodore, mere meters from wiping out the front of the car at over 270 kilometres per hour.
The duo had clawed their way through the pack to get as high as 13th and with only two laps to go, Tim radioed into the team saying he had a flat tyre, forcing him to pit a final time. He managed to re-join for the final lap where he crossed the line in 17th position. A character-building Bathurst 1000 today.
Over 205,700 people walked through the gates here this weekend and a peak audience of over 5 million tuned in to the great race. It was also the fastest Bathurst 1000 on record at 6 hours and 4 minutes.
