The streets of Surfers Paradise showed their cruel side early, as each of today’s three practice sessions saw a red flag when a couple of drivers found the limits of the Gold Coast circuit. Tim and Ash stayed out of trouble throughout the day, whilst on their search for more speed from the Freightliner Racing Commodore. Times were close today with only half a second covering most of the mid-field throughout the day.
Today’s three practice sessions are all that have been scheduled for the Gold Coast 600 weekend. The format for both Saturday and Sunday consists of a twenty-minute qualifying session; followed by a top ten shootout and the 300km races.
The Gold Coast is known for being one of the harshest circuits on the Supercars calendar, with no race here (championship or non-championship) having a 100% finishing rate. Expect the streets to bite again tomorrow!
THE WORD FROM ASH
“I was first up in the Freightliner Racing Commodore today, as were a few of the other co-drivers, just to familiarise ourselves with the Surfers Paradise street circuit again. I missed out on driving here last year due to injury, so it’s essentially been two years since I’ve driven here. This is a track where there is no room for errors, if you make a mistake here it can be pretty big in terms of damage, which we saw here a couple of times today.”
“Tim and I ran through our scheduled program in our practice sessions, both trying to get comfortable with the setup. We tried a few different things to our Alliance Truck Parts Racing team-mates Nick Percat & Macauley Jones, just to see if we could learn anything different, but it’s looking like they’ve gone in the better direction. We’ll go through everything we’ve done today and heading into tomorrow we’ll both be heading out on track with a similar setup.”
